It was confirmed at the Garsfontein Business Breakfast by Mr Willem Strauss, newly elected president of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union that the u/19 Currie Cup will not be played in 2019. There will only be an u/21 Currie Cup. It is at this stage unclear if this change will affect the smaller unions who are competing at an u/20 level.
Mr Strauss further confirmed that the unions will be playing friendlies at an u/19 level with the season ending in a national u/19 week similar to the u/18 Craven Week. He further stated that the u/19 friendlies and National Week will be for the account of the Unions with no financial assistance from SARU.
However, still too many questions are still left unanswered regarding the smaller unions and how their financial problems will affect junior rugby.
